The Blue Ribbon Commission on School Funding held the last of eight scheduled public hearing in Madison on June 4. The Commission heard from invited speakers about how Wisconsin’s school funding system ranks nationally and then took input from the public.
The Commission’s co-chairs, state Rep. Joel Kitchens (R-Sturgeon Bay) and state Sen. Luther Olsen (R-Ripon), mapped out the committee’s next steps at the close of the hearing. They plan to meet individually with each member of the commission over the next couple of months, accompanied by staff from the non-partisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau. Together they will to go over what each member believes needs to be done to reform school funding and then work to draft proposals. The Commission will then come together once more as a group to finalize its proposals before making its recommendations to Governor Walker and the legislature. The Co-Chairs of the Blue Ribbon Commission on School Funding, Rep. Joel Kitchens (R-Sturgeon Bay) and Sen. Luther Olsen (R-Ripon), have announced the dates and cities of all the future public hearings of the commission tasked with taking a comprehensive review of Wisconsin’s school funding system. The next meeting of the Blue Ribbon Commission on School Funding is tentatively being set for Friday February 2, 2018 in Milwaukee.
We don’t have all the details yet about time and place as the public hearing notice has not yet been posted; however, the Commission will be taking testimony from school leaders (including board members, district administrators and school business officials) at this meeting. The Blue Ribbon Commission on School Funding met for the first time yesterday (Dec. 14), holding an informational public hearing that featured presentations from the staff of the non-partisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau (LFB) as well as the Department of Public Instruction (DPI). Those presentations led to a lively question and answer session between presenters and Commission members.
The entire hearing was broadcast live on Wisconsin Eye, our state’s version of C-SPAN. A video recording of the entire hearing should be uploaded to the Wisconsin Eye website and available for viewing on Monday.
