Assembly education committee: new members and the school districts they represent

State Assembly committee membership has been set for the 2019-20 legislative session.  As we previously shared here, Rep. Jeremy Thiesfeldt is returning as chairman of the Assembly Committee on Education. Included in the committee membership are two newly-elected members who are also sitting school board members: Rep. Timothy Ramthun (Kewaskum) and Rep. Robert Wittke (Racine Unified, not running for reelection in April). Rep. Don Vruwink is also a sitting school board member (Milton) and Vice-chair Rep. Joel Kitchens is a former school board member (Sturgeon Bay) and chaired the Blue Ribbon Commission on School Funding.

Below are the other committee members including the school districts represented by each.  If you are a board member or administrator in one of these districts you are in a prime position to influence committee action on K-12 legislation this session. Assembly Education Committee Members and the School Districts They Represent (Updated)

Jeremy Thiesfeldt (pictured) is returning as chairman of the Assembly Education Committee.  This is his second session as chair of the committee. Urban Education Task Force Releases Recommendations

The Assembly Speaker’s Task Force on Urban Education has released its final report. The task force was convened by Speaker Robin Vos (R-Rochester) last year and chaired by Rep. Jessie Rodriguez (R-Franklin) with the aim of improving educational outcomes at urban schools.

Vice Chair Sondy Pope (D-Mt. Horeb) issued a statement indicating Democrats on the task force would be releasing their own separate report soon.

Urban Education Task Force Schedules Kenosha/Racine Hearing

The Speaker’s Task Force on Urban Education will hold its second hearing in Racine and Kenosha on Tuesday, October 13. The focus will be mental health, behavior problems, and truancy.

The task force will start with tours of Racine Case High School and Southport Elementary in Kenosha at 10 AM and 11:30 AM respectively.  Members of the media and the general public are welcome to join the Task Force on the tours. Please RSVP to Rep. Rodriguez’s office (608) 266-0610, so an accurate head count can be provided to the districts.

Urban Education Task Force Holds First Hearing

The Assembly Speaker’s Task Force on Urban Education, chaired by state Rep. Jessie Rodriguez (R-Franklin) and vice-chaired by state Rep. Sondy Pope (D-Cross Plains), held its first school tours and public hearing on Tuesday, September 29 in the Madison Metropolitan School District and the State Capitol.

The tour of the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) included a visit to Samuel Gompers Elementary School that highlighted the district’s phase one technology plan.  The task force members then stopped by Madison East High School the AVID/TOPS program at the school was showcased. That program is a joint effort between MMSD and the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County, which offers disadvantaged students tutoring, mentorship and paid summer internships, in addition to eligibility for college scholarships.

Two Assembly Task Forces to Hold Hearings Next Tues. (Sept. 29)

Two K-12 education-related task forces create by Assembly Speaker Robin Vos (R-Rochester) are set to hold hearings on Tuesday, Sept. 29.

The Speaker’s Task Force on Urban Education will hold its first meeting in Madison at 1:00 PM in Room 412 East, State Capitol. The focus will be on teacher recruitment and retention in urban school systems.

Invited speakers will include: Jennifer Cheatham, Superintendent, Madison Metropolitan School District; Ray Cross, President, University of Wisconsin System; and representatives of the Department of Public Instruction, Teach for America, Leadership for Educational Equity, and the Coordinator of Teacher Education, Milwaukee Area Technical College.

At the conclusion of the invited testimony, the Task Force will accept public testimony regarding the focus topics of teacher recruitment, retention and training.

The Speaker’s Task Force on Youth Workforce Readiness will hold its second meeting in Wausau at 11:00 AM at Northcentral Technical College. Speaker Vos Creates Bipartisan Task Forces on Urban Education, Youth Workforce Readiness

Assembly Speaker Robin Vos (R-Rochester) has announced the formation of bipartisan task forces two of which are related to K-12 education: the Speaker’s Task Force on Urban Education; and the Speaker’s Task Force on Youth Workforce Readiness.

According to the Speaker, the goal of each task force is to explore possible solutions and recommend legislation to the full Assembly. Each task force has an Assembly Republican chair and an Assembly Democratic vice chair. The Speaker has asked the chairs to tap into the knowledge of community experts and those affected in the individual issue areas. The committees will begin this summer with the hope to complete work before the end of session. The task forces will travel around Wisconsin obtaining input and innovative ideas in order to compile recommendations.
