Assembly education committee: new members and the school districts they represent

State Assembly committee membership has been set for the 2019-20 legislative session.  As we previously shared here, Rep. Jeremy Thiesfeldt is returning as chairman of the Assembly Committee on Education. Included in the committee membership are two newly-elected members who are also sitting school board members: Rep. Timothy Ramthun (Kewaskum) and Rep. Robert Wittke (Racine Unified, not running for reelection in April). Rep. Don Vruwink is also a sitting school board member (Milton) and Vice-chair Rep. Joel Kitchens is a former school board member (Sturgeon Bay) and chaired the Blue Ribbon Commission on School Funding.

Below are the other committee members including the school districts represented by each.  If you are a board member or administrator in one of these districts you are in a prime position to influence committee action on K-12 legislation this session. Governor signs two WASB-supported bills into law

Governor Walker signed into law two bills supported by the WASB in a signing ceremony at the State Capitol this morning.

Senate Bill 301 expands the online summer or interim session classes that qualify for state aid to include classes the school board determines fulfill either the statutory graduation requirement in health education or its own requirements for graduation. Under the bill, online classes in any combination of vocational education, foreign languages, fine arts, and other courses that the school board determines meets the requirements for high school graduation would be eligible for state aid. WASB Testifies on Summer School Funding & Firearm Safety Curriculum Bills

The Assembly Education Committee, chaired by Rep. Jeremy Thiesfeldt (R-Fond du Lac), held a public hearing August 3 (Watch on WI Eye) on two bills:

Assembly Bill 398, authored by Rep. Gary Hebl (D-Sun Prairie) and sponsored by Sen. Luther Olsen (R-Ripon) would expand the scope of online summer or interim session classes that qualify for state aid to include classes the school board determines fulfill either a statutory graduation requirement in health education or that meet its own requirements to count toward the number of credits the school board requires for graduation.  Under the bill, online classes in any combination of vocational education, foreign languages, fine arts, and other courses that the school board determines meet its requirements for high school graduation would be eligible for state aid. thiesfeldtAssembly Speaker Robin Vos has announced state Assembly committee membership for the 2017-18 legislative session.  As we previously shared here, Rep. Jeremy Thiesfeldt (pictured) is returning as chairman of the Assembly Education Committee.  This is his second session as chair of the committee.
