Governor Signs Six Education Bills Into Law

Governor Scott Walker signed six education-related bills into law today (Nov. 30) during a ceremony in the Governor’s office in the State Capitol.  They included:

Senate Bill 382, relating to school employee tuberculosis (TB) screening;

Current law requires school districts to condition the employment of school personnel who come in contact with children or who handle or prepare food for children upon a physical examination by a licensed physician that includes a chest X-ray or a tuberculin test. The cost of such examinations, including X-rays and tuberculin tests, must be paid out of school district funds.  Current law also permits a school district to require employees to undergo additional physical examinations at intervals determined by the school district. Senate Set to Vote on Several Bills Affecting K-12 Education Tomorrow

The state Senate and Assembly are set to be on the floor again this week and next week. This is the last scheduled floor period during calendar 2017.  Once it concludes, neither house will meet again until January.

Although the floor session is scheduled to begin on Oct. 31 and run until Nov. 9, neither house will meet on every available day during the floor session.

The state Senate is scheduled to meet Tuesday, Oct. 31, and Tuesday, Nov. 7.
The state Assembly will be in session on Thursday, Nov. 2, and Thursday, Nov. 9.  Assembly members have also been told to keep Tuesday, Nov. 7, open for a potential session day.

Three remaining floorperiods are scheduled, each of them two weeks long, in January, February and March.  However, there is talk of wrapping up the 2017-18 legislative session early in 2018 so that, among other things, legislators can focus on their districts in preparation for November’s election.

Aid Payment Schedule, Character Education Among Bills Discussed at Public Hearing

The Senate  Education Committee chaired by Sen. Luther Olsen (R-Ripon) held a public hearing on Thursday, September 14th on the following bills listed below.

Senate Bill 329.  Relating to:  professional development training in character education for teachers, principals, and school district administrators, granting rule-making authority, and making an appropriation.  WASB registered in support of this bill. Employee TB Screening and State Aid Payment Schedule Bills Receive Public Hearing

The Assembly Education Committee, chaired by state Rep. Jeremy Thiesfeldt, held a public hearing on Aug. 24 on the following bills:

Assembly Bill 382 – This bill relates to screening school district employees for tuberculosis. The WASB worked with the Wisconsin Association of School Nurses and state Rep. Eric Genrich (D-Green Bay) to develop this bill.
