WASB Unveils New Software to Strengthen Advocacy Efforts

VoterVoiceToday, the WASB debuted a new member benefit that makes it easier for our members to contact their lawmakers and advocate for their schools.  If you are a WASB member, you should have received an email today from “WASB Action Alert” asking you to take action and contact your lawmakers to ask them to support the additional school funding proposed by Gov. Walker.

We hope that you will try the new system and contact Dan or Chris at WASB with any questions and feedback on how it worked for you.  This new system is a benefit to WASB membership and is not available for use by the general public. ALERT: Budget Hearing Start Times Announced

Blecha_testify_JFCAs you are probably aware, the legislature’s Joint Finance Committee (JFC) has scheduled six public hearings around the state on the governor’s 2017-19 state budget proposal.

With many interests competing for scarce budget dollars, school leaders need to make their voices heard.  This time, we have the advantage of the governor proposing a significant increase to schools in his budget and we need to make sure the legislature knows how important that investment is to our schools and the students they serve. WASB Government Relations staff (either Dan Rossmiller or Chris Kulow) will be in attendance to assist school board members in registering to testify at all of the hearings.

**IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO ATTEND PLEASE NOTIFY DAN OR CHRIS AT WASB.**

ALERT: Contact Legislators to Support Sept 1 School Start Date Repeal Bill

ottState Representative Jim Ott (R-Mequon, pictured) and state Senator Alberta Darling (R-River Hills) are circulating a bill draft (LRB 1378) to repeal the September 1 start date mandate.  The bill would allow local school boards to determine the start date for the fall semester beginning in the 2018-19 school year. It would not require districts to begin school before September 1st, nor will it affect the number of days of instruction. We encourage you to contact your state legislators and urge them to sign on as a co-author of LRB 1378. The deadline is February 10.

The WASB strongly supports this bill on local control grounds, a position that was reinforced at the Delegate Assembly this year.  It is important that we get as many legislators to sign on to these bills as possible.  The tourism industry will be contacting lawmakers asking them not to support it.  We need to make our voice heard!

ALERT: Support WASB-Initiated Bipartisan Bill to Modernize Publishing of Meeting Proceedings

thiesfeldtAssembly Education Committee chairman, state Rep. Jeremy Thiesfeldt (R-Fond du Lac, pictured), Rep. Jason Fields (D-Milwaukee), Sen. Duey Stroebel (R-Saukville) and Sen. Lena Taylor (D-Milwaukee) are asking fellow lawmakers to sign on to a proposal to update and modernize the requirement for government entities to publish meeting proceedings (minutes) in local newspapers.  This proposal could save many school districts thousands of dollars a year in publishing costs. We encourage you to contact your legislator and ask them to sign on as a co-author of LRB 0506 – publication of minutes. The deadline is February 7.

The WASB worked with Rep. Thiesfeldt’s office to develop the proposal based on Resolution 1.60 approved by the 2016 Delegate Assembly: Continue reading ALERT: Support WASB-Initiated Bipartisan Bill to Modernize Publishing of Meeting Proceedings
