Executive sessions? Budget motions? JFC voting procedures described

Last week, when the Joint Finance Committee (JFC) Co-Chairs announced plans to adopt a budget motion removing more than 130 items proposed by the governor from further budget deliberations, they signaled the difficulty the governor’s budget, and his proposals for K-12 education funding, will face. The WASB is working to preserve as much of a funding increase for public schools as possible. While it is uncertain at this point exactly what K-12 funding items will pass, we do know how the JFC will proceed with its consideration of the budget bill.

Budget listening sessions offer another way to “get your lawmaker’s ear”

Testifying before the Joint Finance Committee isn’t the only way to advocate for your district and students on the state budget.

You can also attend a budget listening session, where you can meet with your legislator in a small group (or sometimes even in a one-on-one) setting.

Recognizing school board members who testified at the Green Bay budget hearing

Recognizing exemplary advocacy efforts by school boards

From time to time we highlight exemplary advocacy efforts by school boards. Today, as part of that effort, we want to call your attention to a proclamation and letter issued by the Appleton Area School Board.

The proclamation declares April 24 to be “Advocate for Kids in the Appleton Area Day” and urges “all citizens and stakeholders to support the future of our children by attending the Joint Finance Committee (budget) hearing in Green Bay and/or contacting the Governor and Legislators to advocate for the areas of needs for all children in the Appleton Area School District.” Continue reading Recognizing exemplary advocacy efforts by school boards

Final budget hearing is Wednesday, April 24 in Green Bay

The Joint Finance Committee will hold the final of four public hearings on the proposed 2019-21 state budget on Wednesday, April 24 at the the University of Wisconsin – Green Bay, University Union – Phoenix Rooms (2430 Campus Court, Green Bay, WI  54311).

The hearing is scheduled to run from 10am to 5pm but may go longer if people are still waiting to testify. Although no one will be allowed to register to speak after 5pm, the hearing will continue until everyone who registered before then is allowed to speak.
