WASB Sample Board Letter to Legislators Regarding JFC Proposal on K-12 Education

Here is a sample letter boards can use when communicating to your legislators about the K-12 education proposals adopted to date by the legislature’s budget-writing Joint Finance Committee (JFC) .  We encourage you to use this letter as a guide.  You may also want to refer to the set of “talking points” on the JFC budget proposal we posted earlier if you want to raise additional concerns.

(Please note that the sample letter does not specifically address removing provisions relating to voucher expansion or the creation of special needs vouchers.  If your board wishes to include comments on voucher expansion/creation of special needs vouchers, you may want to use the “talking points” we have previously provided.)

The JFC has not yet completed its work on the 2015-17 state budget.  It expected to meet again next Wednesday.  It is not clear whether it will complete its work at that time. Typically, the committee’s final budget-writing session includes the adoption of an omnibus “wrap-up” motion, which includes items from many different subject areas.  We expect some additional education issues (such as revisions to the earlier teacher licensure proposal) may be included in that motion.

Your quick action could help the WASB to make additional changes to the final JFC version.
